Yesterday, I purchased two Asian Wood Turtles. The petshop owner told me that they are still young. They are about 4 inches large. I am keeping the in a very very large glass and wire reptile tank. I have three types of lighting: A ceramic heat lamp, a black light, and a long UV light. I have a bowl for drinking and soaking. I have been feeding them a mixture of veggies and turtle food. For bedding, I have some type of wood reptile chips. What else do I need to do to take care of them? I also have a heat rock that is suppose to be very safe and not burn whatever is using it. I haven't placed this in their home tho. Woudl they enjoy something like this? I want my turtles to be very happy. Please help! Any advice is welcomed. Thanks in advance!

Hello, just be patient, they are in a new enviroment, sounds like your doing everything right ..but NO ELECTRIC HEAT ROCKS, not %26 never good to use, for one thing you won't know if they've malfunctioned till they burn or electricute the critters..if you feel they need more heat, you can either add another bulb ( we use the party bulbs , nice colors %26 not too bright on the reptiles or turtles ) or and under tank heat pad, nothing electric belongs inside any reptile habitat, especially heat rocks ..Take Care :)
Your first job is to identify the species. The term 'Asian Wood Turtle' does not properly identify a single species.

How do you take care of a lizzard and how do i find out what kind it is?and how do i know what sex it is?
i just got a lizzard it is green but now it has brown mixed in with the green because i put stix and green leaves in the container that i got when i got the lizzard i know it is getting used to its new enviorment and i know it can eat crickets and i have to put it under a lamp at night and i have to clean its cage every week but is there anyone thant can tell me how to tell if it is a boy or girl and what is the best way to hold it and how do i know what kind it is and what other things can it eat. well my lizzard like i said is green and brown and it moves fast and it is about 7 or 8 in long and it has a pink toung. thanks for your help.

Well the reason it turned a little brown is because you put sticks and stuff in there. Make sure that you always keep him under the light. Any type of reptile is cold blooded, which means the have to rely on the sun or any other type of heat source to stay warm. You can tell when your lizard is too cold when it is moving kind of slow. the lizard you described sounds like a "Green Anole". The only way you kind tell the sex is by having the oposite sex with it during mating season it will have a wierd thing pop out of its throat. i hope that this helped you out.
it is probably either a large green (American) anole or a small green iguana. Does it have spikes on its back? if it does then it is a iguana. If it is an anole then you can tell the difference between a male and a femal because males have a dewlap (a flap of skin under thier neck)
If you caught it in the wild I would suggest you let it go. You are obviously not ready to take care of it. Do some research on different types of lizards and propper care. When you're truly ready you can get another one.
Where di you buy it? I had an iguana and it was like green at first and then kinda purple on top. They told me not to feed it crickets because it can slog up their digestive tract. Feed it greens like collards or turnips, and carrots. Mine liked the carrots the most but my cuz said if you don't feed them greens theys lose their color. For snacks you are supposed to feed them strawberries or bananas but Haze really didn't like them. Also he loved to swim in the bathtub a few times a week. He was fast as hell too. In fact I tried to grab him one day and his tail came off. I cried. As for sex he told me that once the get older you can look between their legs if they have spots they are a boy and if not they are a girl or vicxe versa. I found alot of websites about them!!
Take it to a pet store and ask someone that works there. If not cared for properly it could die.

How do you safely ship a salamander?
I need to overnight a spotted salamander from Tennessee to Texas, and I'm not sure how to do it. I've shipped scorpions before, but salamanders are obviously at a greater risk of drying out. If anyone has done this before or has any good ideas, please let me know. And please reference your information. There are plenty of people around Y!A who don't know what they're talking about, and I need to be absolutely sure I know what I'm doing 'cause I really don't want to lose this little guy.

These are usually shipped in those deli-like plastic containers or small Tupperware-like containers with a few pinhole air holes (not too much ventilation) and a wad of very damp moss that lightly packs the salamander in the tub.
Don't actually do this, but you should add moss to the point that the salamander would not move a lot if you shake the tub!
The lid is usually taped in place, then placed in the actual shipping box with a little additional padding. Air holes are not needed in the outer box as long as it is not taped up air-tight.
Other than the dampened moss, about like you would do for a scorpion, etc.
(You can replace the moss with shredded sponges, wadded paper towels, etc. Some shippers even make a 'salamander sandwich'- damp moss, wet paper towel, salamander, wet towel, a little more moss, lid.)
If you suspect cold temps, you can also include a chemical hand warmer or more in the box.

How do you know if a red eye slider turtle is a boy our a girl?

If your turtle is under 4" in diameter, then there is no difinative way to tell. There are, however, ways that you can get you kind of closer to a determination. After turtles are over about 2" in diameter these traits will start to accurately show. Males have longer front claws than females whose front claws tend to be short and stubby; males have long thick tails which females once again have short and stubby; males shells tend to be more concave (dip inwards) while females shells tend to me more convex (dip outwards) or flat; and the only TRUE and definative way to tell is to look at their cloca (anus) where males cloca is about 1/2 way out on the tail and females are very close to the body. You can't acurately sex them until they are 4" in diameter because when smaller, all of their clocas are close to the body which would result in all being sexed as female when this is not the case.

You can tell from the claw length and tail, but your RES should be at least 4 years old before you can tell for certain. Females will also be larger than males as adults.
You can't usually tell unless they are 4 yrs. Males have much longer claws front claws (used for mating). While the females' are short. The male also has a longer and thicker tail then a female. Females usually grow faster and get bigger then males do. Also the male's plastron will slightly curve inward toward the tail.
Well you've already heard the part about how they are more easily sexed once they are 4 years old.
Actually these small differences are already present when they are still little. It's harder to see but the males have thinner and longer tails than the females.
The females also tend to be a lighter green compared to the males. But this won't be very obvious unless you've got a whole tankful of RES to compare with.
Head down to the nearest pet store and take a look. Then go back and see if you can observe what you noticed.
How do you get a snake to eat?
My friend has a small snake. She feeds it every two weeks. It's time to feed it again and the snake won't take the mouse. She's tried putting it in it's mouth to try and stimulate the snake to eat.

Keep offering food items weeky for 4 weeks.. chances are it will take one in this time. If it continues to fast brain the item..make a small hole in the skull of the prey item and using a nail or pin smear the brain over the head. The snake will then eat.
If its being fed every 2 weeks it will go 2 months easily without eating.
The only other thing likely is it is breeding time.
Live mice can hurt or kill the snake. The frozen is better thaw out in warm water like your friend does.
The snake probably is going to shed again so don't try and feed it leave it alone for a couple of weeks.
Does it have a skin over it's eyes? That is one way to tell if it is going to shed.
