Hello i live in a small north east Kansas town. We are having problems with snakes.?

This spring they started popping up in our basement. There have been black snakes,%26 garder snakes, That we know of. The biggest was a 3ft-4ft. black snake pretty big in my opinion. They have never been upstairs until today. There was a snake, wrapped around the cords that go into the plug in. I had to have my neighbor come over to get it. It wasn't very big, baby probably. I thought it was a garder snake, but he said he thought it was a king snake. Does anyone know of to keep them out of my house? we have tried moth balls, and the gel stuff you buy at a farm store. I am not a huge fan of snakes. Especially when they are In my house. I don't think they would attack but it makes me a little scared when i have 5 year old twins, and a 6 month old baby. Thanks for the help! (also i wasn't sure if it was garder or garter snake :)

The black snakes are most likely black rat snakes unless they had yellow dots then they would be common kingsnakes, and the garter snakes where probably common garter snakes. This is a common problem in many areas. They hibernate in basements. Best advice is to seal up you house the best you can. Moth balls don't really work they just make your yard smell funny. And don't worry these species pose very little threat to your children, it think someone said a 3 to 4 foot could eat a kid that is BS! Completely ridiculous! The worst they could do is bite which is not at all serious. If you have any more questions email me (in my profile) and I will do my best to answer them.
i dont know how to keep them out, but my goodness!! i would probably go insane if i knew there were snakes anywhere near me. you must be a brave person. good luck
The black snakes are probably racers. King snakes are striped, often with tan and orange. Racers are harmless fortunately, as are garter snakes.

The best thing to do is plug any openings that might let a snake into the house and make sure you keep screens on windows and doors shut tight. Snakes are also attracted to warm places and places with standing water. Drain any sources of standing water you might have. Is your basement wet? You might want to work on drying it out.
Hello %26 wow..bout all you can do is maybe have a dog or a few cats - that'll go after them especially little snakes .. %26 in your case.. I would definately call animal control or look for reptile rescuers in a phone book..it would be pretty hard to plug everything a snake can crawl through as babies..but you can look for bigger holes %26 cracks that a big snake can use .. something 3 to 4 ft can be deady to your small children or babies, tho most don't even want to try.. the snakes are finding under your house very homey, there must be food %26 good temps, etc or they wouldn't be there.. moth balls are dangerous around kids or pets, they are poision..usually if you have a dog tho around, they don't usually like them, they are enemys to a snake..if you can't have a dog or cats.. definately call animal control or look for reptile rescuers ..I'll include you a good reptile site, that may have some ideas that could help you, tho they are more into selling %26 caring for reptiles, they may know better what can also help you move them on..Take Care :)
The black snake is probably a black racer. If You have snakes in your basement then you probably have rodents in your house or basement because the snakes need some thing to eat. You probably haven't noticed the rodents because the snakes have been eating them. If you get rid of the rodents then the snakes will leave.
