A few questions about them: What do they eat?? How often do I need to feed them? How much do they cost?? Do they make good pets? Do they bite, if they do does it hurt??? Thanks!

http://www.gartersnake.info/care/...envi... conditions must be warm enough (between 68 and 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit) for the snake to adjust its body temperature to a preferred range for activity. The Garter Snake is active during daylight, mostly in July when temperatures are in its preferred range of 84.2 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Their typical foods are Earthworms and Amphibians. Mice, minnows, salamanders, frogs, and toads are also some of their less typical foods. The Garter Snake eats its prey alive and whole. I am not very sure how often they eat. Sorry. I think you should try feeding them a bowl of earthworms a day All the info you want to know is here at this site,

i had one of those but it was wild and it did bite me but i t didnt hurt and i think they eat crickets and stuff but im not positive...any way
Depends on how big they get Ive seen them eat mice but crickets grasshoppers normaly. the bite isnt bad the one thing is they put off a nasty smell when you hold them then your hands stink its there natural defense.
my brother found one once they eat small frogs and salamanders. i think they hunt mostley in the morning .so a lil frog or salamander may do a day lol no they dont hurt when the bite he got bit he said it didnt hurt. i guess they make good pets he had his for awhile till he put it back outside. my dad told him too let it free. but yeah they make good pets. but i feel sorry for the lil frogs and salamanders ..
Reptiles have very specialized needs, so I encourage you to read as much as possible before making this commitment. My favourite herpetological site is http://www.anapsid.org/ ; you will want to read the detailed description of garter snake care at http://www.anapsid.org/gartcare.html... , and I also recommend the article "So, you think you want a reptile" at http://www.anapsid.org/parent.html... , and "Reptiles are not 'things'" at http://www.anapsid.org/things.html... .
If you do decide that you really want a garter snake and are sure that you can meet all of its needs for its entire life, please adopt from a reptile rescue. In North America, you can find animals in need of good homes through http://www.petfinder.com/ . Wherever you are, you can also google for reptile rescues in your area. Please don't buy from pet stores or breeders; people shouldn't be breeding more pets when there are already so many who don't have good homes.
Garter snakes eat insects and small animals like mice and other rodents, basically anything alive that will fit in their mouths. Snakes' jaws can swallow much bigger prey than would seem. They have the ability to unhinge their jaws, stretching their mouths very wide. I saw one eating a slug once, and oh my... how gross! LOL
I had a few pet snakes as a kid, but not ever in the house... my grandmother would have fainted! lol I basically just played with the ones I found out in the yard, so I didn't know how often they ate.
I've never been bit by a garter snake, but I understand they can and do give nasty bites. They aren't terribly serious bites, depending on the size and particular snake, but any bite that breaks the skin could get infected so I'd just be careful to take care of them right away.
As to cost, I shouldn't think they would cost very much. I didn't look at your profile to see where you live, but in my area you could go out and catch them easily enough.
I did find a site that seems good. You might want to check it out: http://www.mcwetboy.com/reptiles/...
Best of luck.
Hello..I have a great site/store for you, has all the Know about all reptiles %26 their care...snakes, turtles...frogs, Kool site for ppl who like reptiles..Take Care :)
Mostly depends on what type of Garter Snake,,THAT is a huge and Diverse family,,I think if you give it a few pinkies , a few crickets and a shallow bowl of water, with tiny feeders ( fish) and turn up the heat lamps( to make your snake active), It will make its choice. They love to get in and out of the water.
As for getting bitten , You will get bitten if you handle any snake due to the difference in your basic nature, You are a mammal,,snakes are cold blooded, They will react to that basic difference if for nothing else.
However bites will differ in direct proportion to the size of the snake and where it bites as well. Garter snakes are non-poisonous and generally non-aggressive,,All snake will bite if their fight-or-flight reflex is triggered, Usually just handling it too rough will do that...Garter snake are ok,,But if you want a snake with personality,,,Go buy a Western Hognose, ( Or any Hognose for that matter ) That one will give you Hours of fun,,and That one will not EVER bite,,when you trigger that reflex it will roll over and pretend to be dead...easy and fun.
Puts up a good bluff tho,,,LOL

and garters usually cost about $40-$80 depending upon what breed you get a regular garter will cost less then a giant garter
I had some garters for years. They will "fish" for zingers when they are juviniles and when they get bigger they will eat goldfish, frogs, tadpoles, mud puppies. You can power feed a garter to get a decent size from them. mine grew to four feet. they went from 18 zingers each a week to 18 decent sized goldfish a week each. Garter snakes have gum ridges instead of real teeth. if they bite you it shouldn't break the skin at all. If you take a shallow pan and put the zingers in it for it to feed it will put its head underwater with its mouth open searching by feel to capture the fish. just make sure you only put enough water in for the fish to be barely able to swim. that way their backs break the surface of the water and the snake can easily hone in on its prey. My snakes got to the point that I could hand feed them. Garters make good pets but you really need to stay on top of the cleaning of their cage. they eat moist food only and as such their bowel movements are very runny. I used aquarium marbles as a substrate so their movement would drain away from the top so they wouldn't be lying in their own waste. make sure to keep the temperature above 72 degrees and they will need a vitalite just like any other snake. make sure to give it a hiding place and a lava rock to rub against when it sheds. Females are usually much larger than males. do not expect a male to reach four feet in length. it is just not going to happen. If you have any more questions I can be reached by IM or email. Click on my avatar to get the contact info. By the way, my garters loved to eat earthworms too.
