Does injured lizard (baby nile monitor) need leg ampuation?

My baby nile monitor (body about 6 inches long) escaped and received crush/grind injuries to left front foot and left hind leg. He is still using the front limb for walking even though the foot is gnarled, but the hind leg just drags and looks paralyzed/non-functional. The hind leg injury occurred close to the body. There was a little blood at the site of the accident, but he is not bleeding now and seems alert and willing to conduct normal activities (basking, eating, etc). Does the leg need to be amputated? If I leave it alone will it fall off, or could it cause infection/gangrene in the lizard's body? Should I consider euthanasia, or can a lizard do perfectly well with this sort of crippling?

Hello..only time will tell if he's gonna live or die, myself I would put him down...cuz they are huge lizards when full grown %26 that would be the worst problem..with a paralized or gimpy leg ..it will be subject to constant wounds %26 infections as he ages ... ALL reptiles need secure enclosures for theirs %26 yours safety...they are great Houdini's ...if you know a vet that takes care of reptiles..you can do that or check with a reptile store..new wounds can be cleaned with providine iodine ( @ Pharmacys, Wal Marts, etc) watch for sigs of infections..swellings, redness, bleedings...Take Care :)
I have seen many types of lizards that function just fine with an amputated limb, but this guy needs to see a vet ASAP to determine the extent of the internal damage. Only a qualified vet can assess the extent of injuries like this.monitors are tough critters, and will often not show as many signs of a serious injury as you would expect.

Best of luck to you and your monitor. : )
IMHO, you should take your monitor to the vet as soon as humanly possible. Only a trained veterinarian can tell you what to do in this situation. And yes, if the leg is dead, it could possibly cause infection/gangrene, just like it would in any other animal.
You knew this happened and didn't immediately take him to the vet??!!! You are guilty of abuse and worse! There is no excuse - get him to a vet or emergency vet NOW!

You are being very cruel. An Animal Control officer would have cited you by now. Is is your animal's RIGHT by LAW to receive medical treatment.
Do what you think is best. no1 one here can decied that for you, consult with a vet and i just suggest you do not do it yourself! good luck man
