How to trap crickets?

I need them for my lizard.
Answers:
look behind soda machines and shaded areas at dusk, use your hands =) and put them in a bottle or some thing. long grass, by water...
I don't know how to trap crickets, but I catch grasshoppers al summer for my bearded dragon. I think they have a lot more to them than the crickets you buy at the pet store too. You just have to be quick and stealthy. It's fun catching them. The big ones can fly, so go after smaller ones and tire them out if you have to.
safer to buy them , no diseases, or illnesses, from store bought
you shouldn't feed your pet crickets from outdoors, they need captive bred crickets or else they could become ill from it.
~environgrl

I'll try to find the site i read that on for proof.
well if you have them in like a huge tank you can stick a plastic cup in there and get some or w/ yo hands
good luck !
It is not best to give your lizard crickets you caught outside or whatever. They may have been exposed to pesticides or have parasites that could harm your pet. It is easier and safer to just buy them from the pet store.
crickets are 10 cents for 1 and if you have a petco card 1 penny off!! oh dont go catch them they often have parasites. DONT TRY TO SAVE A PENNY OF CRICKETS BECAUSE IF YOUR LIZARD GETS SICK THAT PENNY SAVING WILL MAKE YOU PAY A TON OF MONEY TO THE VET.

How to tell the sex of two red neck slidder turtles?

Answers:
Both of the above are correct. You can also look at its cloaca (opening on its tail). Males have a cloaca that is further towards the tip (and away from the body), while the opening is close to the body in females. As previously mentioned, these traits may not be readily apparent if the turtles are less than 5 years old.
see if one ever pops a ,,,,,,,
It's hard when they're young, but when they get older, the males will have concave bellys (inward sloping), females will be flat. This is to assist the mating process. Males also have longer claws, which is obvious in a side-by-side comparison. I would search this topic on Yahoo or Google in order to see some photos.
Also, it's 'red eared slider', not 'red neck slidder' =P
I read online that females tend to be bigger, but male ones will have longer tails.

How to tame igauna?

our igauna was pretty calm when we brought it home then after a month he cought agressive. do i jus need to get him out more. is there a way of bribbing him with food or something when i get him out
Answers:
Handle him lots. Start with just having your hand in the tank. If he's tolerating that, then start picking him up. And I so agree with the gloves...unless you don't mind taking a nasty bite...and an iguana bite can defiently be nasty. Another trick I used with a highly agressive make I had was about 20 minutes or so before I was going to handle him, I dropped the temperature in the tank a bit...not enough to harm him, but maybe about 5 or so degrees colder. It made him more receptive to being handled because my body heat helped to warm him.

Unfortunately, you may find that no matter what, you may NEVER be able to handle him. Some iguanas will take to it and actually appear to like it, some will just tolerate it and some will never allow it.

When you do try to handle him and he thrashes his tail, bites, etc, that is his way of telling you he doesn't want to be touched. But you'll need to try and work through that and hold him anyway...but for short periods of time. Don't stress him too bad or he can get sick. Just be patient...it takes time. Good luck!!
This is a good sign-agression usually mean they are healthy. I would just handle him regularly, and use gloves when you first pick him up, to prevent injuries from the tail, lol. You should also join this site online, as you can become friends with other iguana owners: www.repticzone.com
Get a good pair of gloves (to avoid personal injury) and handle the Iguana as much as possible. My Iguana loves fresh fruit. Here is a link that you might find helpful.

I've read that iguanas get more aggressive as they age.

How to take care of a wild turtle?

Alright, my friend found a little box turtle on the side of the road and decided to keep it as a pet, how would she go about taking care of it and making it a pet? What should she feed it?
Answers:
To care for a wild caught turtle, SET IT FREE where you found it. They do horribly in captivity, it's bad for the ecosystem and no animal deserves to be taken from their home.
Actually you should free it. Wild turtles can carry Salmonella bacteria, and it is illegal in some states to keep one as a pet.
If your friend is going to keep it as a pet, then she needs to go all out and get its tank properly set up. Search box turtles to obtain all the proper information. And yes, young turtles have a higher chance of carrying bad diseases. So make sure she is washing up good after handling the turtle. I own a red ear slider, so i'm not sure on all the details of caring for a box turtle..
Hi. My cousins have a wild turtle as well. go about as if it were not wild. Turtles can almost adapt to anything. Go to you local pet store and buy some food, a filter, and a glass aquarium of about two feet by one foot. and there you go you gota perfect place for aturtle. But be sure to put a rockofsome sort so the turtle can relax "on land"
Hello, if these turtles are native %26 wild to where you live, YOU DON'T keep them, you put them back where you found them..as they can be sick or diseased %26 can make you or your other pets sick too..if he is not native %26 was someone pet that got loose ( as they often do ) then you have to create a pen for him..outside they need part shade %26 sun %26 a nesting box - they like to hide..in the house a UV light - plant grow light %26 a temp of about 80 degrees..a flat feeing dish, like a dinner plate or pie tin for foods..such as grated hard veges, fruits or chopped fresh greens sprayed with water or thawed frozen fruits - strawberries, blueberries or mixed vege's of green beans, peas, carrots %26 corn..they also need some beetles, crickets, meal or wax worms - which can be bought where reptiles are sold %26 some fish bait shops sell them too ..Take Care :)
Wild caught turtles and tortoises tend to do very badly in captivity, go free it where you found it.

How to take care of a garter snake?

today My stepsister and i found a garter snake while taking a walk. I petted him and he seemed fine with it. she picked him up and he wrapped around her arm. She(vanessa) then noticed a deep wound in the lower section of his tail. I tried to examine it closer and he bit me. He was in pain so we made a home for him. It was an 18" (length) by 7"(width) and 5"(high) plastic container with a lid, which we then cut holes through. We covered the bottom of his cage with a layer of grass. We added a flat smooth rock and shined a lamp on it (for basking) we also added a large tub of water. Shortly after we went and collected some grubs and a worm. He hasn't touched his food! i heard they like minnows, too. We have also heard that you can put Neosporin on his cut. please help if you see that we are doing anything wrong or not doing something!
Answers:
I'd hate to say this but the snake it probably better off on its own. Don't worry it will probably be alright. If it is really hurt than there is not really anything you could do about it- its just natures way. He would probably be happier not cagged up.
easy to see you don't want to harm the snake, so take it back where you found it and let it go.
It sounds like you are doing everything good! Just make sure it has a lot of fresh bugs. You could get some crickets at PetCo or something too. Thats so awesome of you to take care if it! We have a lot of those snakes here. Arent they cool?
You might also call your local Fish and Wildlife and ask if they know someone who rehabs animals like that.
Yes neosporin will work just let him chill a bit and get used to you and he will be OK !!!
From the size of the cage , this sounds like a young snake. You could go with a bigger cage, 10 gal. tank or so, and make sure the snake has a place to hide. The food you're offerring is good, they love earthworms, small mice, small frogs, minnows. You can apply neosporin or a similar anti-bacterial ointment to the wound, but they usually wipe it off by slithering around, so you should do this several times a day. Also, don't bother with crickets or any insects, as they are NOT a part of a garter snake's diet %26 even if you could get a garter to eat one, they are very hard to digest %26 offer almost no nutritional value to the snake

How to re-potty train adult iguana?

My 7.5 year old male green iguana has become lazy in his potty training. I moved him into a badass huge cage last month and he has since forgotten to go potty in his potty water bin that he used to go in. He has another water dish that he's supposed to drink from and soak in but, I don't see him in either of the water bins often.if really, ever. He's been deficating on the newspaper in the other corner of the cage. So I'm trying to find out how I can get him to use the water more. Any ideas?
Answers:
Hello..he's chosen the place he wants to potty %26 that's potty training, if you want him to use something else, put that in the place he's chosen to use as his potty ..>Take Care :)
That is just weird potty training.
Well, mine are free roaming. But if your babe is in a cage, why does it matter where he go? So, he changed his mind. I would suggest cleaning w/ soap, and thoroughly the dishes, put newspaper down where he goes and then just wrap up the feces in the paper and throw out.

Besides he is older, or old. Perhaps keeping track of the 2 different waters is confusing and he would rather keep it simple for him. We too get old. When he is old, it may be too much, too complicated to keep track of which water to poop in and would rather remember not to poop in water period because he needs to drink water. Who wants to drink water with poop in it?

How to remove a frog from my room?

this morning I discovered a frog by my window. It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't in my room.
I have a huge fear of frogs. which is weird considering i live in Florida and there are frogs everywhere.
I seriously can't sleep knowing it's in here.
what can I do!? I
Answers:
Navigate the frog or toad so it is in an area where it cannot escape. Your approach will scare it and cause it to move, so make sure it will not jump into a bush or through a fence. Corners and open fields are ideal locations.
Quickly grab the frog or toad. Humans are much faster than them. You may try to use a bucket or jar, but it is usually harder than just hands.
Put the frog or toad into a high container. They can cling onto many surfaces and may "wall jump" out unless you cover it with a breathable lid.
Shine a bright light at a frog or toad in the middle of the night. This is called spotlighting; the frog or toad will be like a deer caught in headlights, and will be unable to move.
You may want to buy or make a Toad House so that your frog or toad will stick around, or you can let it go in your garden/backyard.

Tips
Frogs and toads will not bite, but some species are poisonous (see warnings).
Frogs and toads will not give you warts; this is a MYTH!
Be the toad! Think like a toad or frog and your success will greatly improve.

Warnings
Many frogs and toads, particularly rare species, are protected by law. Catching them may be illegal in some areas. Check local regulations first.
Some species in tropical regions (called 'arrow-poison frogs') have extremely toxic secretions of fast-acting nerve poison on their skin. Handling these species can kill you. Arrow-poison frogs usually have very conspicuous warning coloration patterns in bright red, orange or yellow - if you find one of these, do not touch it.
While not lethally dangerous, the skin secretions on many other species of toads (including the ordinary brown Common Toad) can cause skin rashes in sensitive people. Handle with care, and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.
Frogs and toads will urinate when frightened. Urine can stain clothes and skin. You may want to wear gloves.
Frogs and toads, like all wild animals, carry bacteria - wash your hands after handling.
Do not attempt to eat the toad or frog raw, cook it to an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees. Light salt and pepper, and a bit of lemon juice will enhance the desired "Froggy" flavor so sought after in the South.
Be gentle with the frogs or toads you catch. If you abuse them or violate their rights, they will haunt you and frighten you.

Things You'll Need
Container
Fast legs
Gloves (optional)
A friend (optional)
Borrow someone's cat.
Kiss it and it'll turn into a Prince. Then you can ask him to leave.
if your happy to pick it up first wash your hands with just water, (acid on our hands can hurt their skin along with the soaps we use ect...) then cup your hand over it bringing your other hand under it to bring both hands cupped.
if you don't want to touch it place a plastic tub in front of it and then touch its back end, it should hop right into the tub, quickly cover the tub and then take outside,
make sure you leave it in a sheltered position ;)
hire a snake.
u have a FROG in your room..!??! haha

well.. put a big cup over it and shift if outside..
You've got to catch it - with a towel - and carry it ouside. Release it far enough so that it won't get back into your house.

Don't kill it - frogs are useful, and harmless.
i don't know. i'm also afraid of frogs... i think the best way would be hit: hit it not that hard to make it fee dizzy, scope it with dust pan and throw outside...
I doubt you have the stomach for this, but ask a family member to get some small crickets or mealworms or something, and put them in an open container. See if the frog will jump in there, enticed by the food? Not sure if that would work, but if you see it when it jumps in, someone can carry it back outside. They are really fast so it will be hard chasing it around the room. Course if it doesn't get enough water it will dry up -- look for a warm or dark, maybe more humid, area in your room and maybe it's hiding there. But believe me, I know you are scared of it, but it is more scared of you, and can't bite or harm you in anway, unless you eat it and get salmonella.
Frogs like to croak. So go to the local CD store and buy a Frank Sinatra CD. Put Frank on and wait. The frog will come out of hiding to croak along with Frank and "BAM" you nail 'em.
have someone else take it out for you

How to open a Pet Shop?

We are wanting to open a pet shop in are area.
Are there any type of requirments needed or license needed for opening a pet shop? we are just wanting to sell small animals like reptiles(leopard geckos, anoles, frogs, ect.) Fish, rodents (mice, hamsters, gerbils, rats) and some birds, like parakeets and finches.
and some pet supplies. no pups or kittys. we are in missouri if that helps any...
Please help us out! cant find much on internet!
Answers:
Well for one thing, you should have a thorough understanding of business management and the procedures of creating a startup under your belt.

You will have to talk with your local city hall about acquiring a business license. You should also be able to obtain zoning information about where you can possibly set the store up, the legal requirements involved and what you will have to go through.

Also contact your local humane society and shelters to find out what kinds of requirements are involved for owning and maintaining a pet shop in a humane way.

Make sure that if you do buy from breeders, that they are thoroughly licensed, have papers, test their animals for problems and provide veterinary care before selling them.

Have good connections with local veterinarians, since you will have to ensure that the animals are well kept and provided for.

You may want to try working with local sanctuaries and shelters in order to adopt out pets instead of buying them as well.

One last thing:

Try to have a thorough understanding of each of the animals' care, habitats, behavioral characteristics and personal health problems.

You will need to have a good understanding of animal behavior or ethology, restraint and handling and overall knowledge of the subject.

Check out your local college or university to see if they have any animal care, or management programs available.

Hope this helps.
I don't have a direct answer but I will say this..

The best thing to do when starting pretty much any business is to try and get a job working for someone else in the same field. You will eliminate a lot of mistakes and get paid to learn. You might also find out it's not what you wanted to do after all and that way you won't be out any money.

If you can't go to work for another company then do at least one year of research before you sink any money into it. Anything worth doing with worth doing right. Have patience.
well, the first step would be to ask your local business license center (normally found at your local government office) about the requirements needed for your type of shop. I think you can show them your proposal for your business, like were are you planning to open the business, the total cost and profit it might make so they can check how much they are going to charge. This will be easier if you go in person to your city government or go on-line if they have a web page.
Since I don't know in which county you live, here is a link to the Missouri's state business portal
http://www.business.mo.gov/
You might be able to contact them and ask more questions or might be able to direct you to the right person.
Also, check the American Veterinary Medical Association page to check the guidelines of proper animal handling and care, you might also find info on how to open your shop
http://www.avma.org/default.asp...
Good luck opening your business!
the best advice I can give you .DON'T OPEN A PET SHOP!!!
work for another shop for at least 2 years and then CAREFULLY CONSIDER YOUR OPTIONS.
I was in the business for over 30 years as an owner, lots of hard work and heartache, its a 24/7 job and the idiot customers will drive you crazy. I f you want to work with animals try these options.
professional pet groomer
bird handler,reptile supplier,doggie day care,
rescue operation for a certain breed or animal.
really think this one through before you leap in.
best of luck !!!
NOCD
are you going to build the store, or rent out space??? if you are going to build you need to get permits and such from your city... if youplan on renting out space at like a mall or plaza, you will need to talk to the owner of the place to see what he will allow you to have there. some places wont let you sell certain things... your local city hall will tell you every permit or lisence you will need to open up shop where you live so just call or stop in there and ask them..
if you plan on selling animals you might want to talk to the DEC to see what types of animals you are allowed to sell in your state.some types of reptiles and fish are illegal, and you dont want to lose your business liscence from a careless errror..
you should look around for used gondolas and shelving from stores in your area that have extra or from stores that have recently closed down. you are going to need to do a search on some distributors that can supply you with pet products. (penn plax, pet net, royal, phillips, fedko, etc.) you are obviously going to need adequate tanks and cages for your animals and you are going to have to make sure they are all taken care of properly because a lot of people will call the spca on you if they think the animals are living in bad conditions or not being taken cared of.

How to moisten dry snake skin?

I have a huge snake skin hanging on my wall, about 7 to 8 feet long, I'm moving and need to pack it. When i recieved it, it was moist and rolled up, over time it dryed and now is brittle. Anyone know how to re-moisten it without ruining it? or how I can get it rolled up without breaking it?
Answers:
You can re-moisten it with a regular bowl of water. but I wouldn't try to re-roll it like pantyhose.. I'd just "fold" it up a few times, and store it loosely for moving.
What has worked 4 me is spraying them with a bottle sprayer, and wait a bit , if to dry they will tear...then fold them up with wax paper between the folds so the skin don't stick to it self....worked well 4 me.good luck
I have given away hundreds of snake sheds over the years and I can tell you that once they dry out after being shed they are brittle and there isn't much you can do but this will help.

I have had a little luck wetting them down with warm water in a spray bottle and then once they are nice and moist you can roll them but not too small.

Give the skin about a 15 minute soak time but not too heavy a soak, just where it begins to form water droplets on the skin. Then rub clear, natural mineral oil into the skin very carefully by hand and let it sit for a couple of hours rubbing more into it about an hour into it.

You will need something about the size of a baseball that is circular in shape, not sure what you might have laying around but the larger the better. Anyway, cover the item with saran wrap and then rub mineral oil all over the saran wrap, then roll the skin around the large object and then lightly rub mineral oil on it as you roll it on and cover it with saran and use scotch tape to hold the saran in place. Wrap a towel and blanket around the whole thing and box it up.

-Good luck.
Baby Oil
Is this a shed snake skin or a skin taken from a dead snake? If it's a shed skin, give up, they will just disintegrate over time, they're too thin really to preserve. If it s snake skin, you can care for it just like you would care for leather.

How to hold a squirmy toad?

I have to educate children about reptiles/amphibians as my job, and there's this one toad in particular that I always have trouble with. It's a "pacman" toad and you can't put your hands in front of his face (because he'll try and eat them). What is the ideal way to hold him so that he doesn't always try and jump out of my hand?
Answers:
Hold him in the palm of your hand.
His head can go between your fingers and you have control.
Rubbing the belly calms him.
If you hold tightly around, with fingers on back...he gets scared, like he's prey and will kick and squirm.
Remember, rub belly.hold from underneath. (legs dangling)
Have him sit on one hand and with the other hand, create an opening for his head to poke through.
Though, I don't know if I'd get kids to hold a biting toad!
Try holding them were the back legs join the body that way they can't jump away and your fingers are away from the face, i had on when i was younger and i was told that, never seem to hurt him, and i never got bit.
Best of luck
try to gently scoop it up with ur under hand then lay ur hand on its back for a couple of seconds then take it of see if it stays don't keep ur hand down too long or its a sign of aggression.
the best way to do this is if you hold it in your palm and lightly and softly stroke the back of him make shure you do it calmly and gentally. if he jumps out try it again, rember to stroke it back with your tip of you finger naile or the back of your hand.
You would, of course, be wearing a surgical glove as your skin is very harmful to him and you could hold the frog with your thumb on the top of the body and your fingers beneath him. Gentle but firm pressure to stop him from leaping away.
you kind of fold your hand
beats me

How to get rid of cockroaches & lizards in home?

Answers:
get a snake
move!!!
well call an extermator and what kind of lizards are they write me back at buddynlucky01@yahoo.com
Fumigation - use smoke bombs.
First bring in a spider to eat the cockroaches then a bird to eat the spider then a cat to eat the bird then a dog to get the cat then a goat to chase the dog out then a cow to scare the goat then a horse to kill the cow. oh and about the lizards I dont know you should probably move out
As far as I know, you cannot get rid of cockroaches. You can only control their numbers. Heck, they have outlived the dinosaurs, the prophets, the pyramids and the Roman Empire. Exterminators cannot get rid of them. They outlive exterminators too.
I have a house I abandoned for 2 years because of work and travel. It was empty. Not a single scrap of food. No water. No garbage. When I came back, the roaches are still there. They survived by eating my books.
I have a lizard (gecko) problem too.
Hello..you can't really get rid of them..the lizards tho are there to eat the cockroaches, you have Nature's control..you can have your home fumigated, sometimes you have to leave, the house is tented %26 blasted with pesticides that will kill any living thing in your house %26 contaminate any foods you forgot to move..also very expensive..the lizards are there cuz the cockroaches are DINNER ;) I wouldn't mind having your problem ( lizards...) tho :) Take Care :)
if you have roaches then you want the lizards around
You DO know that the lizards(which are harmless)are there to EAT the cockroaches, right? Let them do their thing, and when their food supply is gone, they'll move out and look elsewhere for food. They aren't going to hurt you and they aren't going to eat or contaminate YOUR food, unlike the cockroaches. They don't crawl through the sewers, so they're unlikely to spread diseases, unlike the cockroaches(and the risk of Salmonella from a wild reptile that's not kept in an unclean captive situation is VERY rare, anti-reptile folks, otherwise I would have died from it a long, long time ago, before you were even born).
cocroaches like damp dirty dark areas. lizards like cocroaches

How to get ADFs tested for chytrids?

I've been looking into African Dwarf Frogs recently and found many of them are dying of the chytrids fungus, and that all water needs to be boiled or bleached before getting rid of it because of the chytrids fungus.

So I was wondering how to get your frogs tested for the fungus.

Thanks!
Answers:
I don't know if there is a test that can be done on them while alive or not. I do know of a lady who is a moderator on a dwarf board who thought that one of hers died from it and she sent it off to be tested. Luckily it wasn't the fungus. I want you to join this dwarf group and they can tell you all the info you need to know about the fungus.

How to find a pet lizard that is lose in the house?

Answers:
Hang meat arounfd the entire house. It works best if it's raw and touching the walls so he can get to it. His natural attraction to the enzymes in the meat will draw him to it. While he is consuming the meat you simply grab him.

Do you have a cat?

Hallelujah Holla Back
set a trap, get one of those cages that has the trigger at the closed end, hang its fav food in there and try to go out for a while, when it goes in and gets the food it will trigger the door release, whala one caught lizard
Normally a lizard of any kind will come out when they are hungry enough.
If it is cool in your home, A/C on, he may be hibernating.
We could not find our Bearded Dragon for a week, till one day my son heard scratching noises coming from under his bed.
He was up under the box spring.
He ripped the material and made himself a little hammock.
Does yours normally run the house, or does he stay in a tank?
If he runs the house, then put the heat lamp next to where he eats.
If he got out of his tank, then put the heat lamp next to or on the floor to get him to come out.
Hope this helps!
Oh, by the way, be very careful if you have reclining chairs. Check under them before opening and closing.
A friend did that, and crushed his lizard.
Depends what kind of lizard. If it's a bearded dragon look on the warmest spot in your home... mine loved to hid under my bed for some odd reason. Geckos like to hide under things and in corrners. Snakes hide under everything and anything. Reptiles arn't really dumb so leaving food out might attract them but more than likely when your sleeping or out of the room. Your best bet is to look in a bunch of spots every so often. Over the next few days. Works well for me... even if I don't lose animals that often anymore lol.
Hello ..depends on the kind of lizard..most like high spots, geckos will come out @ night %26 head for the ceilings cuz that's where flies hang out @ night..iguana's, beardies..things that don't climb like a gecko will seek high shelves, tops of frigs, etc ...cuz warm air rises, so they head for the warm spots...Take Care :)
HAHA good luck. i had a baby bunny get lost in the house when my cat brought it in...still aint found it.6months later...

How to feed an baby eagle...wat does it eat.?

Answers:
If you need to ask this question, you are not qualified to raise it and you need to turn it over to someone who is.

If you are in the United States, please click this link and find out the closest Audobon Society rehab center to your residence so that this bird can grow up healthy and safe, and maybe have a chance to be wild as it should.

http://www.audubon.org/states/index.php...
regurgitated food from the mother
If you somehow have found a baby eagle, you need to contact wildlife officials and get it to a Raptor Rehabilitator.
what kind of eagle is it?
they eat fish, for example, like trout or salmon
you would have to ask a vet etc because if you just feed it meat etc it will die
you most likely have to feed it mice etc which you buy frozen yuk but that still would probably not be enough so ask the proper people because that's safest
oh yeah what sort of eagle makes a difference so take it to a vet to get checked out as well here in australia you dont pay the vet bill for any native bird or animal you take to get fixed if its hurt in any way
It is illegal to keep birds of prey without a license. Contact your local athorities for information.
If you have a baby eagle you should seriously consider, no, you need to call the wildlife folks and let them know. They will be much better suited to take care of the thing then you could. If not them then call the zoo.call someone.
fist off this is for reptiles anot birds second off if you have a baby eagle you can puree its food and use a syringe to help feed but i would call the wildlife rescue shelter for them to take care of it

How smart is a leopard gecko?

I have one, and was just curious if they knew what was goin' on??
Answers:
My leopard gecko seems to know that I am the one who feeds him(not my husband). When I come home from work and go into my bedroom(that is where his tank is) its almost like he hears me, he'll come out of his cave and crawl over to the glass and look at me. Sometimes he even licks his mouth. Like "hey, its time for food!" And mine goes to the bathroom in the same place too, like other people mentioned. Maybe he is an exception, but I would say he is pretty smart for a little lizard.
They are not very intelligent
i have a leopard gecko too.
all i know is that you can't train them or anything like that.
they are the type of pets that you get for the beauty.
i definetly wouldn't call them dumb creatures though. they see movement and they are pretty good at lettin you know if they need water cuz they start lookin for it (digging).
so in conclusion, not dumb, but not the same kind of smart as a parrot.
I'd say they don't have anything special going for them. They eat and drink and don't show you anything you wouldn't expect from them. Still nice pets though.
Hello, all animals %26 reptiles are smart in their own way..leopard geckos are just mellow mostly, reptiles, lizards, snakes just aren't like say dogs, takes smarts to survive in the wild, especially when small ...Take Care :)
They are pretty smart; I'm the only person who feeds them, so they come out of their hide when they see me, but when they see other family members, they don't move one bit. They also have a specific spot in the cage as their bathroom.
They are amazing and beautiful creatures! They can tell what's going on, but they aren't the smartest of lizards, for example. However, they do go to the bathroom in the same place in their cage, etc.
Hope this helps! :)

How should i cut my bearded dragons claws?

i have two bearded dragons they are about 6 month but have grown and so have there claws but i do not want to cut them myself and my friends wont tuch them i put a how bunch of rocks on the buttom but they did not work or ware them a little at all where or what should i do

Here is a web site that can help you.

My Bearded Dragon claws have never been a problem. I would take the Dragon to a Vet for claw trimming and have the vet show you how to trim it's claws so you don't hurt it.
I hope this helps.
Hello, didn't know their claws where so bad..with our iguana's we used, clean sharp toenail clippers or open ended, cleaned dog clippers work too !! Take Care :)
use small animal clippers such as those used for a cat, make sure you only clip the black part off, and have a tissue, and some cornstarch ready just in case you cut it too short and hit a vein. If you cut it too short, dab off most of the blood then carefully add some cornstarch to aid in clotting.
my suggestion is to avoid clippers and use an emory board it will reduce any damage to the meat underneath. if you damage the meat under the nail it could lead to an infection. most people can trim the nails pretty easy when they get older but as young they probably should be filed instead of clipped. in my oppinion

How old is my RES turtle?

My female red eared slider has a carapace length of 6.25", how old do you assume she is? She was abandoned, and I started caring for her a few months ago. I estimated she was about 8 years old, but I don't think I know enough about the subject to make an accurate guess.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Answers:
Your turtle is not quite 8 years old yet. Shes probably around 4 years old. They grow about an inch and a half each year until fully grown if fed correctly. Take Care!
just get on the internet and seach http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/red-eared_s...
there will be a lot of info.
or seach red eard slider on google
None of my res have gotten that big yet but mine is 4 yrs and 6" well according the pet store he is 4 yrs.. You are probably right, remember though that turtles dont grow much as they get older and she is female which means she still has to double her size. I think about 8yrs seems like a pretty gould estimate.. congrats..
She is probably between 4-5 years old. My female RES is about that length, and shes 5 years old now. I've had her since she was a baby.

How old is my baby red ear slider?

Hi, i was wondering how old my baby slider is. Right now hes about 1.5in, when i got him (April 7th) he was about 1 in. does know or have an estimate of how old he is?
Answers:
I'd guess he's about 6 months old. It's truely impossible to tell unless the person you bought it from watched the birth or you your self watched the birth. There's no accurate ways to determine it. No counting rings. No counting lines.
5 months, 13 days, 12 hours, and 53 sec old exactly. No I'm kidding... it's sometimes hard to judge age by size. I've seen animals that are a year old and smaller than the average size. But I'm guessing 2-3 months ish. Most animals are about a month old when you get them from a petshop.

How old is my baby beardie?

I purchased my first Beardie about a month ago but after asking all of the "important" questions, I forgot to ask how old she/he was. She is about six inches long from nose to tip of her tail. She is doing great and growing but I just want to know how old she is because I am trying to follow a chart on what to feed her and how often, according to age. Thanks for any advice in advance.
Answers:
here is a website you can compare your beardies growth to. at 6 inches he/she is about 6 weeks old
Probably only a matter of a couple of months at that size, certainly much less than a year. They can easily be 10 inches long at 5 months of age, so I would think it's probably only 2-3 months old at the most. It's most likely less than that.
Take it to the vet, they would be able to find out.
Ronald would like to invite you and your friends to a free party at your local restaurant, all food included.

How old do corn snakes have to be before they can be bred??

i have a one year old corn snake and was thinking of buying one of similiar size
Answers:
Sexual maturation of reptiles is generally a function of SIZE, not age.
When they are adult sized, they will breed.
The age at which they reach their adult size is a result of how much %26 how often they eat.
More food=faster growth=breed sooner.
Be aware though, overfeeding causes health problems and short life expectancy.
At about a year %26 a half..18 months to 2 years old...but it's not just a matter of putting 2 snakes together...there are certain %26 requirements %26 needs that have to be met for the best results..TC %26 Peace :)
Breeding Corn Snakes

First of all, it must be stressed that you should only attempt to breed your corns after doing loads of research. Your best bet would be to buy The Corn Snake Manual by Bill and Kathy Love. You should also think about what you are going to do with all the babies and whether or not you will be able to look after them until they are sold. I might also add that the minimum size that you should breed females at is around three feet. Anything much under that could seriously endanger the animal(s).
The snakes' environment must be altered before breeding to encourage brumation - this is a lot like hibernation but the snakes can still remain fairly active. Brumation is a simulated winter. Most breeders do this because it stimulates reactions in snakes that prepare them for mating the following Spring. Some breeders choose not to brumate and still get very good results. However, eggs are more likely if these changes have occurred.
The beginning of the breeding process is the 'fattening up'. This comes just before brumation to ensure that both males and females have enough nutrients to make it through the winter. Starting in September feed your snakes twice as much as usual. This means offering two items each week instead of one. Females will usually eat a little more than males.
Before you start to cool down your snakes, it is vital that their guts have been completely emptied. To do this, stop feeding and keep the temperature as normal for three or four weeks before brumation. Make sure you still provide clean water daily. When you are sure that your snakes' tummies are empty, you should cool them down to 61 degrees Fahrenheit (16 Celsius) very slowly over a two-week period. Their light should be reduced to almost nothing within this time also. Give fresh water twice a week but try not to disturb them too much. Brumation should last for around 2.5-three months. It is important not to disturb the snakes too much during this time but fresh water should be provided twice a week. The whole process of emptying guts and cooling down should start in early-mid November.
The snakes should be warmed back up over a two-week period to their normal temperature of around 85 degrees. Temp should be back to normal by early March. After about a week at the normal temperature, you may offer the animals food again. When the female has her first shed after coming out of brumation, she will be ready to mate in about a week. Place the male in her viv and wait. Copulation (mating) can take from about twenty minutes to an hour and a half. To be sure the mating has occurred, leave the male in the cage over night and remove the next day. Give both snakes a few days rest, and then reintroduce the male for a further day. This can be done four or five times and a double clutch may or may not occur. If mating has been successful then eggs should be laid in around 30-45 days.
When the female sheds, it usually means that the eggs will be laid in around 10-14 days. At this point you should place a large box with a whole cut in it in the top so the eggs can be laid inside. The box should ideally be filled with damp sphagnum moss or paper towels and should be big enough for two snakes of her size to fit inside of. Use a box with more horizontal space than vertical. By this time, the male should long since have returned to his own cage.
Eggs will either be fertile or infertile. Healthy, fertile eggs are a plain white a slightly yellowish-white. The shape of them can be anything from oblong to nearly round and they are 0.75 to 1.5 inches (1.9-3.8 cm) in length. After a few hours, healthy eggs are smooth and dry in appearance. Infertile eggs, however, are often wet looking and very yellow. They are usually very small and sometimes dented. If you are 100% sure that eggs are infertile then you may dispose of them but it is a good idea to put all eggs in the incubator as some really odd eggs have hatched out as gorgeous, healthy babies. To be absolutely sure that these eggs don't infect the healthy ones, keep them separate from other incubating eggs by keeping them in a plastic box.
A few hours after laying, it is time to transfer the eggs from the nesting box to the incubator. If the eggs are separate you must make a pencil (not pen) mark on the top of the shell to ensure you keep them the right way up. If the eggs are in one or two big clumps then DO NOT separate them. Put a thick layer of sphagnum moss at the bottom of the incubator and lay the eggs on top. Then lay another layer of moss on top of the eggs. The moss needs to be damp, not sodden. To achieve this, soak it in water and ring out the excess.
The best temperature to keep inside the incubator is 80 Fahrenheit (27 Celsius). At this temperature, eggs will hatch in about ten weeks. Eggs can be successfully incubated at lower temperatures but be careful not to make it too hot. If the eggs are overheated then the babies can develop problems such as kinks. Many incubators do not have marked temperature dials but just plain knobs. You must experiment to find the correct level of heat before the eggs have been laid.

i bought 3 of the red ear sliders a couple of months ago and did a little reading on the little guys. they can get to be anywhere from 20 to 35 years old and get as big as 6" across.I have a little pond for them that I'm sure that they wont outgrow.

How often should ball pythons poop? And if not often enough how can i help?

I have a ball python alittle over a year old, I feed her a medium sized mouse once a week, she has a great appetite, is active and seems happy, but sometimes goes for several weeks without pooping, last week i read that you can soak them in warm water to help loosen them up, which i did and it worked VERY well, but im still worried about her. any tips?
Answers:
I wouldn't worry too much about it. They don't poop as often as you think. It sometimes depends on the time of year. Generally in summer they are more active and poop more. Winter is much less (one of mine went for a few months). How close it is to shedding can also effect it. If she's not acting normal and your still highly concerned, you can keep trying water, just make sure you don't dry her out, or find a vet who specializes in reptiles. Good luck to you.
Snakes often poop once a week or so, so I wouldn't really worry.
make sure the tank is at the right temps, and that you have a hot and cool side. no they dont poop often. soaking is the best thing you can do. once every week or to is normal.
it all depends on the name of the snake. like, a snake named dexter would poop 3 times a week. fifi wuld go twice. but if the name starts with a vowel, it only goes half a week.
It can be several weeks btwn poops if you are feeding smaller-than-appropriate meals. A year old ball pythons should be on small to medium RATS and left mice behind long ago. A year old ball should be at least 3-4' long and as thick around as a woman's wrist, if not fatter.
It does depend on the size and frequency of their meals. Do you know how much she weighs? A year old girl may be able to eat more than one medium mouse, depending on her size. Or, she may be ready to move up to a slightly larger sized rat. Age is not a deciding factor on this though, as Balls all can grow at very different rates. Only you can decide if she is ready to be moving up to the next sized rodent or an extra quantity of mice. You could give her a try on a second mouse next week, and see if she accepts it.

Soaking is usually the best way to get things "moving", if constipation is the problem.
It will depend on how often she eats . She should poop a few days after eating . If she doesn't the first thing I would check is your temps and humidity levels . You should have 60-70 % humidity level in your tank . If you notice the snake straining you can give her a warm soak . Try increasing the humidity . If that does not help she could be impacted . Are you using shavings as your substrate ? Many people do but I do not recommend it . The shavings can get ingested and cause impaction and mouth rot . I would put her on news paper or reptile carpet . If impacted you may need to see a vet .

How much would you pay for a 3 year old Corn snake?

I am thinking of selling it but don't know what to offer for it - I think its a female , in very good condition and eats well. Ive got a vacumm plastic viv to go with him , some furnature and a heat mat. Any suggestions?
Answers:
Try lookingg at ad trader online and see what others are going for. I reckon about 拢30 for the snake would heve to see the stuff to know its value. I could be wrong though so do a little rersearch. Good luck.
id be willing to pay at least $675,000.00 if not more ! my goodness!! where on earth did you ever find this specimen?
What kind of corn is it? Some colours are worth more than others. Around here, hatchlings in stores go for around $130 CAD, without any of the equipment.

If in doubt, look for some breeders in your area to judge how much your snake and setup are worth and go from there.
I prefer Chicken ore beef.
There are enough snakes around where I live. Cobras and Boas that get very big. Little green snakes that are very deadly. Brown snakes that are very difficult to se but are not poison. Others that I do not know very well. They are not pets but live here with all of us.
Well at the mall down the road from my house they sell the snakes for about 150.00 and the equipment depending on the condition can gor for around 50.00. I would look on ebay and compare prices of everything. good luck!
Where do you live? I might be interested. I would be willing to pay 拢50 for the snake but I can't comment on the equipment until I see it. Send me a message if you decide to sell it.
depends how bit they are, they go for 拢75 in our herp shop for the standard colour. there are loads of other color morphs though, some with no black, some with no orange, some albino. look around, see what you can find.

How much water does a veiled chameleon drink?

Answers:
They don't drink from dishes normaly but I've got them to. They don't need too much water nor do they need high humidity. They are from a dryer climate than say... panther chams. usually I will give a veiled a light morning misting and if they keep drinking I'll give them a heavyish mist.
they drink drops of water thats as much as i know?
Always have water dripping from a dripper. They will only drink "moving water". In hot dry weather they will drink much more than more humid weather.

How much should i sell a tortoise for?

He is about 65 years old, very healthy and happy. He is about the size of a dinner plate. no special breed, just a run of the mill sort.
Answers:
Poor old thing if you cannot keep him please do not sell him to highest bidder, it is far more important he goes to someone who will care for him properly. I'm sure its not legal to sell them in the UK any more which is good indication that its not a good idea.
He is familiar with his set up with you but will be confused in new home and could get stressed and not eat or hibernate properly. For this reason its important new home is experienced and can provide his textbook needs even if he has not needed it while with you.
I am not suggesting you have not cared for yours but many people in the UK where the temperature is so erratic have no idea how to care for their tortoises correctly. Lots die needlessly, many of those who do survive for years do so by luck rather than good husbandry and luckily these tortoises have learnt to adapt.
Why not consider finding a retirement rescue centre where he can live out his life?
50p
its illegal, they are a protected species
depends what people are prepared to shell out for .
i saw an advert in my local paper and they were asking 拢265.
they are extremely expensive to buy or get hold of now..there's a 3 inch tortoise complete with licence advertised for 拢150.00 in my local paper..so this should give you a good guide not an expert but i should say you re going to be looking at about拢1000.00
why do you want to sell it?...especially if its so old, you should keep it in familiar surroundings. i had one for about 30 years she was like a little dog following me about lol.
Whatever the market will bare.
Remember when it comes to old tortoises its a sellers market, so stick it to them good.

Why do you want to sell grandpa? Poor thing is in retirement mode and you want to up and sell 'em.
65 pound a pound for every year of his life
they are rare so I say 拢23
i would check local pet stores and see what they go for but keep in mind the older the animal the more they usually charge do to cost of care
If the critter is native to where you live ... it usually illegal to sell them, even in reptile or pet stores..so be forwarned of that, especially if you intend to advertise sucha sale ... but older, captive bred adult turtles bought from a pet or reptile store %26 not native... fetch high prices..Peace %26 TC :)
There is no such thing as a "run of the mill sort" of tortoise.
It has a species name, and you should identify it, as no one will buy an unidentified tortoise.
If it is, for example, a radiated tortoise, you would get thousands.
If it is a sulcata, good luck GIVING it away.
Find some online reptile classifieds for pricing ideas.
It would really help to know the species- and a photo would help a lot in determining value.

Most people do not want to purchase large adult tortoises, so you really cannot ask as much as you could for a younger one, regardless of species. It is rather like buying an old dog or cat.

Also, since you don't know the species, we do not know if the tortoise is illegal to own in the US (such as a Desert Tortoise), and I am not sure we can know that it is healthy. For example, if the shell is pyramided, or it it is a normal size and weight for the species and age, etc.

How much should I be feeding a 1 year old veiled chameleon?

He seems to eat and eat and eat and never stop.
Answers:
Veileds can be disposals. so you might want to regulate their food to a certain degree.

Over the years we have had hundreds of veileds (seriously, we had 400 hatch one year). What we have found is that if they eat too much, they will outgrow their bones. Let me explain: their body weight is too much for the density of their bones to support. If this happens, MBD can occur, and that is not what you want to happen.

Even if they are getting sunlight or plenty of UVB and UVA lighting - they can still get MBD if their bones cannot support their body weight. We have seen this in chameleons (veileds mostly) and bearded dragons.

Sinced veileds come from desert regions (Saudi Arabia and Yemen), and they live in the brushy areas of river beds (wadis) to find insects - they don't have what we could consider a "plentiful" feast. So, instinctively, they will eat every bug in sight. For this reason, we choose to regulate their intake. We offer an average of a dozen crickets or that sized insect per day. Some days, they get fewer; not every day do they get fed. Remember - in nature - there is no one delivering their food.

If you do some research on the web, you will find that many chameleon breeders recommend a structured diet until the veileds are adult - and don't forget the calcium supplement (dusted insects) twice per week to help bone strength.

Once veiled are adults (2 years+), we let them "pig-out" once in a while. Their bones should be well formed by this time, and the less frequent calcium dusting is maintenance.

Enjoy your chameleon!

How much sand to use in a 75 gallon tank for bearded dragon?

Hello. I first want to start off by adding that I know basic math. Im not very good with volumes and areas and stuff like that. I have a bearded dragon that is now 8 inches and is in a 29 gallon tank. Im gonna put him in a 75 gallon tank with sand and I would like to know how many pounds of sand to put in there. Ive heard of how much for aquariums but not for terrariums. Thanks
Answers:
Hi I use playsand about 3/4 of a 20kg bag then when Pedro goes to the bathroom I just scoop it out and replace the sand as needed I do a whole tank change every 3 months and I use about 4 tablspns of baking soda mixed in for added odour control. Calci sand is the type you should avoid they lick it on purpose to get the calcium. I just keep a small dish of calcium powder in the tank with him to lick at will as well as dusting his food. you will hear much controversy on using sand as a substrate but think about thier natural habitate and make your own conclusion. :)
Don't use sand, it's horrible to work with, harbors bacteria and is generally unnatural and unsafe. Especially petstore 'calcium sand' is down right dangerous.
Use tile, bricks or repti-carpet.
DO NOT use sand. dragons lick everything to get an idea of their surrounding and ANY loose substrate- even if it says on the bag is digest able- it isn't.eventually the particles build up in the digestive system and block it- a condition known as impaction- which nearly always leads to death. i use ceramic tiles from the hardware store as flooring- they are natural looking, easy to clean(much easier than sand. if you dint believe me-sift your sand the next time you clean it and see what comes up) and cheap. they don't get to hot and there is NO risk of impaction. just lay them down in the cage and they last forever- unlike sand which needs to be replaced every month. your dragon is WAY too young to be on sand now, i would get rid of the sand and use paper towels until you get tiles . if you take my advice- stay away from vinyl floor tiles- the heat from the cage will cause them to give off fumes. good luck.
I would use ceramic tiles, you can bring the inside measurements to Home Depot and they will cut it for you. It is actually a lot safer and easier to clean.
none. Loose substrates can be very dangerous to beardies, especially a hatchling like yours. It can cause impaction when ingested; or when it goes in the other way when the vent is open. I suggest using Linoleum, tile or shelf liner. Any solid bottom is best.
For more info on Impaction, check out this article written by some of the 'top dogs' on Bearded Dragon.org
http://www.beardeddragon.org/articles/im...
For a 75 gallon tank, about 5 lbs. should be plenty. We have a 100 gallon tank and put 5 lbs. in that. But yeah, don't use sand. We use grounded up walnut shell, and it's much easier to scoop up the tank with a slotted spoon.

P.S. I would not recommend a flat surface. We adopted a breadie that had 1 lb. of sand in a 40 gallon tank, so he grew up on a glass surface. His owners didn't realize they need to clip his nails, so two of his nails curled up and are permanently embedded in one of his feet now. Poor guy had it rough in his earlier years, and he hit his 10th birthday and is still going!!!
DON'T USE SAND!!! it's bad for repitles try something like small wood chips that are kinda wet
I do not recommend sand for different reasons: can causes high numbers of coccydia to build up (intestinal parasite that they have small numbers of but if they build up can cause internal damage, weaken the immune system and cause other parasites to move in), because some will ingest it especially if their not getting enough vitamins and nutrients in their diet and makes them unable to pass through their system causing death. Try rabbit pellets if they eat them it won't kill them plus it can be cheaper and easy to clean depending.

How much money is a black panther?

Answers:
Probably a lot. Then you have to add in the court costs for your trial, the $25,000 penalty, and time lost. All in all it's a bad idea to even think about it.
It really doesnt matter, you aren't going to get one anyway.
A black panther isnt a reptile...
It's illegal to own this type of pet. So, if you get one it will be on the black market and since you are asking questions here, I'm certain you do not have the resources or contacts to obtain one. That's good news for the panther.
An arm and a leg.

The red tail...about average price, maybe 100-130 depending on the show pricing.the Argentine on the other hand is gorgeously patterened, and she could (on estimation) anywhere from 300-400 again, depending on show price. Your problem with breeding was their size, they are both at least 2 feet too small to breed, and if you could have them as proven (successful) breeders, they'd be worth more.
I'd take whatever you can get for them. I myself would not want to have snakes of that size in my posession. You may call around and see what they go for but snakes are really not pets.

How many times do Crested Geikos lay eggs?

Answers:
About, well they normally breed at night and then lay 2 eggs in approx. 28 to 40 days after mating. I am not sure if the double clutching thing with snakes is the same with geckos but if it is they cant lay as many or it can hurt them. But if its not, then as many that can be laid within that period.
They will lay eggs approximately every 35-50 days (depending on the female) and can lay year round. Each clutch usually results in 2 eggs.
Just to give you an idea, we had one female lay Jan.30, Mar.13, and again April 17.
And another that laid Feb.13 and April 2.
crested geckos will lay eggs year rouind, usually 2 at a time every few weeks, you shouldnt let this happen though, every few weeks you should take the male out for a bit, everytime the f3emale forms a new egg, it removes calcium from her body and bones to do it and can take its toll on her life... good luck and research more if needed

How many live crickets to put in tank with RES?

I'm going to give my red ear slider some crickets...How many should I let loose in the tank? And how long should i leave them in there if he don't eat them right away? Thanks!
Answers:
RES eat alot, I would sujest putting a good number in and see how many it eats, they will eat crickets and get alot of nutrients from them, but it may prefer earth worms and feeder fish, its your choice though.
There are several opinions on this. Choose your favorite:

- Only as many as you want to chase in your house if they get out.

- Only a few at a time, and remove them if not eaten in a couple hours (my personall choice!)

- Pretend you are raising crickets- how many can live safely in the tank? A green plant sticking out of the water can safely house a few. Pretend to raise them, and just replace those that get eaten.
Actually, pond sliders are aquatic turtles, so...

You should be feeding him minnows as a main staple.

How many fish do i feed my baby red ear slider?

I have a baby red ear slider. hes about 1.5-2 inches long. recently, i have started feeding him feeder fish that are 0.5 to 1 inch long. should i keep feeding these to him? he seems to have no trouble at all catching them and eating them. and also, if a put a large sucker fish that was about 5 inches long to clean up the turtle leftovers, would my turtle try to eat or attack him right now?
Answers:
Yes, it's fine that you're feeding him this as long as you don't just feed them this. You need to also give them a staple food, pelets (ZooMed's and T-Rex make awesome pelet food, Wardleys and ReptoMin are ok but don't have the same amount of nutrients that all turtles need, especially when they are babys). As far as the amount goes, I'd put about 10 in the tank and see how it goes. They'll eat the fish as snacks. My adults eat about 5 fish a day if not more plus their pelets. Fish amount is really up to how many you want to put in there. If you were to add a sucker fish now, you should be fine but later on your turtle might eat it. You could also add snails. They have a finer chance of being eaten by your turtles (still happens sometimes) and last forever. Right now you're almost safe with any type of tank cleaner but once it grows to 3 or 4 inches then nothings safe (basically).
If keeping the tank clean is your second concern, add some ZooMed's Repti-Safe which helps with pH, cloramites, etc which is really good for the tank (keeps it clean and the infamous turtle smell that most inexperienced owners encounter).
well i think it is wrong to feed live animals to other animals why dont you try a non live food and you might get some answers or you wouldnt have this problem
Britt (the one who commented above me)...what do you think animals in the wild eat? Even yourself, do you not eat food that was once alive? Even if you are a vegetarian, are those plants not living things? Some people are MORONS!...

If the RES is doing fine catching the fish, then I don't see a problem with feeding them to him...You may want to try some that are a little larger because these may be too small and he will eat them all at once. As for the sucker fish...I don't think he could eat him due to the size, but I'm not sure I'd put one in there. I've never heard of anyone doing this.
You'll want to feed insects as well, such as crickets and earthworms. A high protein diet of fish will cause pyramiding of the shell. Add plant matter as the turtle grows.
The turtle will probably try to chase the sucker. He probably can't kill it yet, but if he does, so what?
Yes i think you should feed him fish after all he or she is still a baby.I don't know it will eat the other fish.Britt is wrong. After all maybe she ate meat once in her life and anyway turtles need meat.Catching fish gives the turtle exercise and food.Oh and I forgot it helps them with hunting ,like if it were in the wild.

How many crickets do i give my green anole?

Answers:
as many as he will eat, lizards will stop eating when they are full, although dont leave the crix in the viv overnight as they tend to nibble the lizards
Depending on the size anywhere from 6 to a dozen... Just put a few in at a time and let him eat... He will stop when he is full...
I have two green anoles, and they eat 4-5 dozen small crickets a week between the both of them.

How many baby blue-belly lizards can we expect and when?

My brother gave my husband a pregnant blue belly that he found in my grandparents yard. We have it in a big fish tank with dirt, rocks, crickets, and water. For about two weeks, she was digging maniacly around her cage. She finally stopped a couple days ago, and I'm guessing she laid her eggs because she's much thinner (she had a HUGE belly with bulges sticking out) and her skin is darker. We have her heat lamp directed on the pile that we think the eggs are in. (She finally dug a deep hole and then kicked most of the dirt in the cage up on top of it). How many eggs did she lay? How many might actually hatch? When will they hatch? Will the babies survive? (my guess is no, as we have three small scorpions in the same tank - the lizard and the scorpions seem to not bother eachother, but will they eat the babies? Will SHE eat them?)
Answers:
No blue-bellied lizards do not eat their babies they eat big and small crickets and flies but they will not harm their babies in any way!
Please next time don't take anything from the wild unless it is hurt and you are going to nurse it back to health. Don't take it home to be killed by your scorpions.
that's a pretty jerk move seriously.... i wish i could put you in a cage with some cobra snakes

about the same scenario huh ?

How long will a pet frog live, i would like to know what to feed a frog?

Answers:
Well, both questions depend upon the type of frog you have. Most predominantly land-dwelling frogs eat insects. You can feed a bullfrog earthworms too...and several other species of frogs will eat earthworms. If you choose to feed your frog crickets, you need to either feed the crickets with a high-calcium diet or dust them with calcium powder prior to feeding. If the frog you have is an aquatic (underwater) frog such as an African clawed frog, they eat live fish, usually guppies or rosy reds...or anything in the tank small enough to swallow (i found this out the hard way)! i have also found that the clawed frogs will eat shrimp pellets (usually considered to be a fish food). Frogs as pets can live for many years, but again, how many depends upon the type. Best wishes!
Hello..pet frog ( ? ) ..if this is a wild caught frog, it is best to let him go ( where you found him ) for one thing they can carry contagious diseases that can make you or your pets sick ... if you bought this frog from a pet store, they will know what care it needs ..but all frogs eat bugs..some of the big toads or frogs will eat each other, frogs %26 mice..when they grow up..Take Care :)
I had an African dwarf clawed frog (an aquatic frog) that lived for almost 5 years. When I got him, I fed him frog food I was given. Over time, I ran out and fed him fish food (beta food pellets) and he did fine.

For non-aquatic varieties, I think you'd do well with freeze dried flies or other insect.
We had a pet frog that lived awhile. He was a tiny one that stayed underwater in a fish tank at all times. He got really big - the size of a normal outside frog. One day he jumped out of the tank %26 we found him dead on the steps. So be prepared, it may get big %26 then it will beable to jump out of your tank. There are these food cubes that soften %26 break apart in the water that you buy at the pet store - I can't remember what they're called though.
Many species of frogs and toads can live for surprisingly long times. They seem to average somewhere between 4 and 15 years. Most frogs and toads will eat all sorts of bugs and wiggly jiggly things. GOOD LUCK!
My African Dwarf Clawed frog is 2 years old and he has been eating the goldfish flakes that I feed my 3 Goldfish who are also 2 years old. This is the longest I've ever kept fish or frogs alive so I guess the food is good.

How long will 28g last my RES?

I have a 10g for my baby RES. hes about 2in right now. im probably gonna buy a 28g off my freind. how long will this aqaurium last him?
Answers:
Until he grows to 2 and 1/2 inches. They need 10 gallons per square inch of shell for swimming room and extra for basking. I have an adult 12" female in a 180 gallon tank and an adult male at 9" in a 120 gallon tank, just for an idea.
if its a 28g ( are you sure its not 29?) long itll be fine for while, id prefer seeing him in a 35-45 long tho, with a nice big basking area, a filter, and what not. itll last him until hes about 5-6 inches.

it will last all of iots life but will grow to its adult size and get either stuck or smash the tank or it might not live

How long should you wait for baby corn snakes to be fed when new and what if the pinkies seem to big?

I just got a baby corn snake on Sunday for my son but the pinkies seem to large for him. He doesnt seem interested at all and I tried the seperate cage and he doesnt seem to be shedding how long should you wait to feed them when trying to get them adjusted and should you feed pinkies when they seem so much larger than him?
Answers:
If you just got him on Sunday, he needs at least a few days to get adjusted to his new home and feel comfortable. I know your son probably wants to hold him all the time, but give the little guy a few days of "alone" time to relax, and then he will probably feel more like eating. Be sure that his enclosure is properly set up and the temps are correct.

Pinkies may look like a huge meal, but it is very rare that a hatchling corn cannot eat one. If you are absolutely certain that he cannot eat one, you can try feeding just the head (yeah, I know.gross but it does work) for the first feeding or 2, and then move up to whole pinkies.

Just hatched corns usually shed a few days after hatching, and will be ready to eat after that. Unless you bought him directly from a questionable breeder (most will not sell a baby until they have shed at least once and had a couple of good meals), I doubt he is a brand new hatchling.

Just have a little patience, let him settle in, and I'm sure he will do just fine for you. : )
=( awww thats awful..
How young is it?

You may also want to find out if it had been fed and if it was a problem eater before it came into your possesion.

A young hatchling, once it has shed for the first time, should begin feeding on pinkies, taking one every 3 or 4 days.
if the pinkies are a bit too big, you could cut the pinky in half. there are a lot of good tips at:
www.cornsnake.co.uk

which will help you out if you go on questions and answers. if you got a feeding record with your corn snake, it should show you when he/she last shed and fed. if you wait a week from that day then try to feed him/her, this might help. i hope this info helps and hope you corn snake gets better soon.
pinkies come in differnt sizes but you need to check the temp in his/her viv if its to hot or cold they wont eat ( causes stress) also how many hides does the little one have as for feeding i tend to leave mine alone (dont touce )for the first week let him/her settle in then offer food corns are norm very good with food just leave on the floor of his viv near him and he should eat
do check temp 80 down cold end also get the small pinks to start and increase size as he/she grows
try feeding them eathworms or slugs. You should wait until after there 1st shed to feed. They should shed there skin not too long after beeing born.

How long should i wait?(Snake Question)?

Hi,i just got my first Green Tree Python. His enclosure and everything is fine.Im an experienced snake keeper.Every snake i owned i fed the first night i got them but the care sheets for the Green Tree says to let them stay in their enclosure for a few days before holding ant attempting to feed.

Do u guys feed on the first night?
Or wait a couple days afterward?
Answers:
Hi! My husband and I breed GTPs and we always recommend that you wait at least 3 days after introducing them into their new cage before attempting to feed. This gives them a chance to come down from the stress of being moved and to acclimate to their new surroundings. Just because the snake will feed shortly after being moved, doesn't mean it should be fed that soon. We've fed GTPs of ours too quickly after a move before and have had problems with them regurgitating the meal.

You can check out our care sheet on feeding too if you'd like.

Good luck with your new chondro!

i have ball pythons and i waited for a couple of days to feed them. i always let them get used to their cage first before feeding. i breed the balls and when i get a new one i do wait for a couple of days. it won't hurt them to wait but if you feel that he looks hungry then feed him, don't wait because they can get aggressive if you wait to long to feed him. it all depends on the snake as well, some can adjust more quickly then others so i would go by your gut feeling, and with you feeding on the first day after getting them then i would just feed. like i said before it depends on the snake and how fast they can adjust to their new home. good luck.
Hello, well if the snakes eat, they eat, if they don't they don't..green trees are one of the more agressive - but neatest snakes...am guessing with Ball ( Royal ) pythons they may not eat right away, %26 beings snakes can go long periods of time wo eating safely sure not anything I'd worry about..here's a really cool reptile site too, it's the reptile store we use %26 they have the know how ... been around forever %26 deal in captive bred reptiles only..love the green tree snakes %26 would love to have one..but they are very expensice round here, even as babies ..Take Care :)
It's really always best IMO to give them at least a day or two to get settled in and feel secure in their new surroundings before bothering them in any way, except necessary care. Less chance for regurges from stress, and better chance that they will indeed eat. : )
I don't have one of those but with all our ones we have I have always waited 3 days before feeding them. Let it settle into it's new home for awhile before feeding it.

How long should I keep apart my red eared sliders?

I found a red ear about 8 months ago and he is in an aquarium and doing great but I just found another one that is the sixe of a quarter. When I put him in the tank with the big one the big one tried to bite him. Do I have to keep them seperate or will the big one leave the little one alone?
Answers:
slowly introduce them to each other, but it may be neccesary to keep them apart untill the small one gets larger
I have a red eared slider and a yellow eared slider, and they are both males. At first they didn't get along but they got used to each other. Put you smaller one in the tank with the big one and just keep checking on them for a few days. If they still don't get along then wait until your small one gets bigger and then try it again.

How long from the time ball pythons lay their eggs do they hatch, and what do I feed the babies.?

Answers:
They typically take 60 days to hatch, give or take a few days depending on temperature. They should be incubated between 87 and 90 degrees. If you are using maternal incubation (letting the female snake incubate the eggs), do not attempt to feed her during this time as she will not eat and it will just stress her out. Also, you should bump the humidity in her cage to 70-80% during this time.

The baby Ball Pythons should be started on live mouse fuzzies or rat pinks, but they can usually be transitioned easily to frozen/thawed after a few feedings.
I can't answer much about the time frame for hatching but you will want to feed the little guys and gals fuzzy mice from the beginning.
Why do you have ball pythin eggs?
Hello...the eggs are not viable / any good unless she's been mated ...egg bearing reptiles lay eggs ..like chickens..fertile or not .. so if she's not been mated the eggs need to thrown out so they don't cause disease ... if they are viable %26 she has been mated..once they hatch..they need things like pinkies/fuzzies they may also eat bugs - beetles, crickets or worms of sorts too..but definately pinkies or fuzzies depending on their size @ birth ..this is why we prefer male egg bearing reptiles..we don't want the egg problem !! Take Care :)

How long does the hawksbill seas turtle care for the young?

Answers:
Not at all. As with most turtles, they lay their eggs and then leave them. This is all that they have evolved to care for their young which helps explain the small numbers of them.
Like all sea turtles, they lay thier eggs on land then return to water. The babys hatch and go to the ocean, the only time that they return to land is to lay eggs. The babys never meet thier parents.

How long does it take for a tadpol to become a frog?

Answers:
not all species mature are same rate.-------the ones I had took about 6 weeks if memory serves.
Hello ..a few weeks or more ... if kept in it's pond or ditch water as you found it..when it does turn, if it lives...Please release him back to where you found him or in any near by water or pond source ..Take Care :)
It varies depending on the species and how well you're keeping it.
In the wild, many toads transform in a few weeks.
Green frogs and bull frogs transform in two years.
Well like everyone has said it depends on the type of tadpole it is. I am raising tads right now (african clawed frogs) and it has taken about 39 days for the first ones to morph. If you google the type of tadpole you have you should be able to find a care sheet on how to care for it properly and also how long it takes to morph.

How long does it take for a snake to moult?

can you watch it happening, or does it happen too slowly for that?
Answers:
It starts with the old skin loosening from the new skin. The snake with take on a dull sheen and the eyes will become cloudy. This can take upto two weeks to go thru. The actual shedding takes very little time, 10-30 mins. They start with their nose, rubbing it on a rock or tree. It doesn't take much for the skin to catch on something, the snake wiggles out of it and then it just pulls off the body. Most of the time, this is done in one piece but not always. Our Ball python often sheds his skin in a million bits and pieces.
The molting process would take place pretty quickly, I would imagine. If you've ever seen a picture of a molting snake, you'll notice its skin trailing after it, in one piece. It appears as if the snake is crawling out of it. If molting happened as slowly as a dog sheds fur, bits of the snake's skin would be left wherever the snake went.
I would often help my snakes shed.
when they are rubbing the skin off their faces, I would wait until they got past their eyes. then I'd help them out.
Slowly and usually in one piece I'd get a fully shedded skin :0)

Not all snakes do the single shed thing. I was able to do that with Bullsnakes, boas, and one king snake. It did not work with all King snakes or garter snakes. It just kinda came off in pieces.

So shedding can take from one hour to 4 days that I have seen.
you can watch it in days it take about 12 days for a full shed when it shedding its skin if your lucky enough you an watch it but it will take about 12 days and you will notice when it will happen in most snakes the colors get duller and there eyes will turn blueish then about 7-8 days later you will see a shed

How long does it take for a Firebellied Toad to give birth?

I have 2 Firebellied Toads and they may have mated today.I want to know when the female will give birth.
Answers:
According to my sources, quote:

"Between April and May, they mate several times with the male embracing the female ( = amplexus) in the pelvic region. She secures her 80鈥?00 eggs in globs on stalks or blades hanging in water. The larvae develop in pools or puddles. Their metamorphosis is complete within a few weeks, peaking in July鈥揂ugust. The toadlets attain a length of 12鈥?5 mm. But the breeding period extends till the end of summer. The eggs, laid in August, metamorphose only after the winter, with the toadlets attaining a length of 3鈥? cm. These toadlets still have a white belly. They reach their sexual maturity in the 2nd to 4th year of life."

So the toads don't actually give birth but the eggs hatch in a few weeks it says so let's ball park that and say three weeks.

Edit: Oh wait, I read that again, not till July or August it says there, so two months, correction.

Edit#2: I'm not a herpetologist, but yes sir. 80-300 eggs means 80-300 tadpoles and eventually 80-300 toads. When you click on that link go to the bottom where it says "external links" because there is a toad care link there with additional information. You may have to destroy many of the eggs or tadpoles I think to not have too many, but not all of them because many will not survive due to natural causes. So don't destroy all but one. Leave ten or twenty I'd say. If anyone else knows the answer to this question please feel free to offer your input for 2 points too!!!

How long does it take for a Bearded Dragon to shed it's skin?

Answers:
It depends on many factors. The beardys health, humidity, and heat are major factors. If you mist it, this will speed up the process. I'd say over all it takes between 3 and 12 days.
Hello, bout a week or so..some added humidty, misting their cage once or twice a day is also good..if in a aquarium or all plastic cage, then once a day is good...just don't let things get soggy wet..Take Care :)
my experience is around 5-13 days like the others said misting bathing and bumping the humidity up to around 80% helps alot. after the majority of the shedding has occured and it looks like its about over check out the toes and under the chin if any loose skin is present remove it using a washrag that is soaked completely do not ring it out. just lightly rub in one direction then repeat the next day it should come right off.
It takes about a long time for my beaded dragon to start shedding after its shown signs, I say a month or less.

My great aunt has a pet squirrel. She did not take it from the wikd just out of the blue...It was on her porch and its leg was ingured and he was all alone and was a baby so she nursed it back to health.after she let the squirrel back into the wild,it kept trying to get into her house and wouldnt leave her porch. So it came inside through her open window one day and it stayed there ever since.

This happened 4 years ago and Stumpy is still alive and kicking today. She likes to roam around the house and eats corn on the cob and other different foods.

How long does a bluebelly lizard carry there unborn until they deliver need to know.?

how long do they carry there unborns?
Answers:
Fence lizards (blue-belly) seem to carry their eggs(gestation period) for 3-6 weeks after mating, which usually occurs from april into mid- summer. Then they lay their eggs, 7-14 seems to be typical. The eggs are laid in moist-not wet- soil, or under rocks or logs. the incubation period( the time the eggs take to hatch), is about 6 weeks if kept at an average of 78-82 degrees f. Colder temps can add up to a coupple weeks, a little bit higher temps might speed it up alittle, but around 85 degrees or more (average), the eggs can die. Probably averages under 70-74 or so would be too cold also. You can tell if they are carrying eggs because when they get close to laying, they will be very fat, with little corn kernal sized lumps in their side.
If you have a fence lizard that appears gravid(pregnant with eggs), give her a couple different places to lay her eggs, like I described above. Medium sized plastic containers with moist( not wet) soil or vermiculite (ask for vermiculite at OSH, or other garden supply places) work well. put an entrance hole in the top of 1 side, fill them 3 or 4 inches deep with the soil or vermiculite. put it in a mildly warm part of the cage, and hopefully she will use it. When the eggs are laid, I like to tranfser them to a different container. the little plastic ziplock boxes like you would put a sandwich in work well. put an inch of vermiculite (moist, but you cant squeeze water out of it), then carefully put the eggs spaced out halfway buried. do not rotate the eggs from their original position, and if they dont want to come apart- leave them together. put them somewhere that will stay in the high 70's to low 80's, and give the container a few seconds of fresh air every couple days. lightly mist them once every week or two if needed to keep moisture level right. I f you have good eggs, and the conditions are right, the eggs should stay plump, and often get much bigger. if they wrinke, they need more moisture. It can take a couple days for them to plump back up. Too much moisture will cause mold and dead eggs. 6 weeks or so later, hopefully you will get to see them hatch.

How long do Meal Worms live??

I am considering switching my leopard geckos diet to meal worms. as there is no close place around here to get crickets, and when i get a bunch of them(thinking theyll last me awhile) most all die before my gecko can eat them. So mealworms can be stored in your fridge right? what type of container and what stuff do they need? and most importantly, how long will they live? Please help!
Answers:
they dont die. they turn into beetles, and i find if you keep them at room temp they stay alive for more than a month (dont transform into beetles either at this point) my chinese water dragon also loves the whitish fat ones (mealworms are also very good for powdering with calcium supplement, it sticks to them) . but BEWARE crix are still the best staple diet for leopard gecko's, i would suggest a variety of different insects including: -

Crickets

There are different sizes and colours of crickets. Some make noises some don't. As a rule you should feed your gecko food items which are no more than the length, and less than half the width, of the lizards head. Black crickets are slower than brown crickets thus making them easier for your gecko to catch. Crickets are known to nibble on geckos, so it is not advisable to leave crickets in the enclosure overnight without something to eat like a small amount of grated apple or carrot.

Cricket Nutritional Analysis
Cricket type Moisture Fat Ca:P Ratio Protein
Banded Cricket 71.8 6.3 0.64 16.5
Black Field Cricket 66.7 12.0 0.82 15.8
Silent Brown Cricket 68.8 9.3 0.77 16.4
Brown House Cricket 70.7 4.4 0.32 19.8
Source Reptilia Magazine

Mealworms

When feeding mealworms to your animals it can be an advantage to feed them newly moulted worms as this reduces the amount of chitin and increases the nutritional value ratio.

Locusts

We like to vary our geckos diet and locusts of the appropriate size can offer a high protein package. It is usually only the high cost, which prevents locusts from being considered as a staple dietary item.

Waxworms

You should not feed waxworms as a staple diet as they have a high fat content and can prove addictive. Feeding them one or two per week as a treat is sufficient.

Silkworms

Silkworms are sometimes difficult to get hold of but if you can they are a very good source of proteins, vitamins and minerals. Only purchase enough to last you one to two weeks as they have a short shelf life.

How often?

Hatchlings and young geckos can be fed 4-8 food items once per day. Adults can be fed 4-10 food items of the appropriate size every 2-3 days. Geckos being nocturnal prefer to hunt their prey at night, so it is advised to place food items with your Geckos after dusk.

Supplements

As well as our calcium dish we use Nutrobal once every week to powder their food. Nutrobal is a high potency calcium balancer and multivitamin supplement to help bone growth in snakes, lizards and tortoises. Leopard Geckos cannot overdose on calcium but they can on vitamins.

hope this helps
Until something else eats them.
i get 100 live mealworms, they come in like a tupperware thing with holes in the lid, filled with sawdust. they lie dormant while in the fridge, and wiggle a few minutes after taking them out. they seem to stay alive for 10 days or 2 weeks, usually, i don't keep them much longer. you can buy canned dead crickets and mealworms if your rep will eat them.
I am not 100% sure but the chick in our local pet store told me that meal worms turn into beetles? So they aren't suppose to die but transform.
Meal worms are very hard to keep alive. And most small batches only live a few days. I'd just stay on the crickets.
Mealworms are the easiest and cleanest live food to feed your pets.
They are beetle larvae so they technically live quite long but grow out of their larvae stage after about a week - 10 days depending on the local temperature and their diet. Try it out with one batch and see for yourself.
I remove them from the sawdust and fill their container with rolled oats or wholemeal bread. You can even drip some vitamins onto the bread so your reptile will benefit from this when it eats the mealworms.
I also leave a slice of apple inside to give them access to water. I change the slice once a day..
You'll see them grow plump and healthy on this diet. I use them for my fish and when I am raising baby birds. They seem to love the ones that have just moulted (they are whiter in colour than the rest) so you can pick them out and try them.
You gecko will go crazy for them I think.
Good luck.

How long do corn snake eggs take to hatch as all different sites and books say all different ammounts of time?

im just buying a snake and it is going to lay its eggs any day now and i was wondering how long it would be until i hade the hatchlings
Answers:
temperature and humidity greatly varies the hatch time. around 80 degrees, give or take a few will be fine, and a humidity level greater than 80% will be needed, but expect, under those conditions between 65 to 100 days, Ive been breeding corns for near 20 years and every year is slightly different and I use the same incubator every year, good luck and congradulations
Around 60 to 70 days. You ever take a day.
Hello...depends on when she mated ..am sure it's an average or about the times you've seen listed on different sites, no one can give you an exact time ...it's just an average ..Take Care :)
it really does vary, it normally takes between 50 to 100 days but the average time it takes is 65days.
Make sure you use a nest box so you can monitor her and also read up on how to care for the eggs as they need to be kept at around 80/82 degrees.

How long do american green tree frogs live for?

i have one and hes about 4 years old so i dont know if thats his age limit, he is also not climbing on the walls and sleeping on the ground and loosing weight and im giving him alot of crickets but i dont know if hes is just really old or if he is sick, if you think hes sick what do i do to make him better, please tell me what to do!!

It seems they live to be around 5 years old. I have those things all over my area. Sometime they hop into the space between my car door jams and startle me when I'm getting in to go to work. Hope yours gets better.
I would put him in the front yard and run over him with your lawnmower, if you do that and he is still alive, I would be inclined to think he will live a few more years, good luck, i hope this helps....just kidding i hope froggy is ok peace out
5 year, 8 months, 2 weeks, 4 days, 13 hours, 56 minutes, 8 seconds... Exactly!
Description:
These beautiful frogs have become a very popular pet species over the recent years.
They are grass-green colored, usually with a creamy colored line running from the jaw along the flanks. (There are sometimes specimens who don't have this green line, but they are a very small proportion) It looks similar to its European cousin Hyla arboria, except that it is slighlty thinner and longer.
Habitat:
Green tree frogs can be housed in a large, unheated vivarium, out of direct sunlight.
You may also want to get them a flourescent tube for localized heat which apparently they like to hang out on for hours. The temperature should generally be maintained between 20 and 25锟紺 (68-77锟紽) during the summer, and a bit cooler in the winter.
This species seems to do really well in captivity provided they didnt get too jolted in shipping. Apparently these guys often arrive in pet stores in such bad shape that even the most tender loving care won't save them. However, if you got one in good shape, they are really pretty hardy creatures.
Read more information on this subject in the Housing Your Pet Frog section.
(see the Frog Doctor for details on illness prevention.)
Diet:
These guys eat the usual insect diet. Crickets, moths, flies, etc. A vitamin supplement powder should be used at least once a week. (See my page on Dealing with Crickets for more info.)
Habits:
Males make a really loud noise thats a bit like quacking, which is sometimes known as a "rain call" because they tend to make a lot of noise after warm noises, but which can also be stimulated by external noises.
